The fact about technology is that it is highly prone to change with products improving all of the time and new versions of current favorites being released on constant basis. What is introduced to the market today will be replaced by another version sooner or later.
Where network connection is concerned, cable types and models are of the essence in regards to the level of performance the cables provides. The most used type of cable is the Cat 5 version, originally designed for networking of lower speeds than the Cat 5 e and Cat 6 types. (Cat 5 can handle speeds between 10 mbps and 100mbps and a transmission rate of 100 MHZ). Cat 5 cables are quickly becoming too shorthanded for the current connectivity needs. The Category 6 variety is a much better cable with less noise and crosstalk and bigger bandwidth. The speed level with the Cat 6 variety is much higher (10gigabit). Before rushing to make an upgrade, individual needs need to be considered. The following factors determine cable type choice:
- Bandwidths are paramount to speed. Bigger bandwidths will transfer more data faster than smaller ones.
- Ability to carry data undistorted from one point to another. (also called signal attenuation)
- Ability to repel EMI (Electromagnetic Interference). Other electric devices in the room may affect how information is transmitted through the cables.
- Affordability. Budgets govern most purchases. However, sometimes it is better to pay more for better services and convenience. Older models or cable types will not give you better services than recently introduced versions.
